Dayton Diode Wiki

This checklist covers the responsibilities of the Master of Ceremonies (MC) for Dayton Diode's First Friday events. In general, the MC is the primary Dayton Diode representative at the event, and will be the person to open up the space, introduce the speaker, and clsoe the space at the end of the event.

  • Arrive at Dayton Diode between 6:00 and 6:15 to open the space.
    • Make sure to open the front door, turn on the lights, make sure space is clean and neat for guests, and adjust the temperture (open windows and turn on fans in summer, check heat setting in winter, etc). Remember, guests may arrive early, and the announced opening time is 6:30.
    • Check in with the presenter and make sure he/she is ready and has everything they need (projector is setup, etc)
  • Greet guests as they arrive. Nominal arrival time is 6:30 to 7:00.
  • Around 7:00 settle the guests down (kindly remind them it is time to begin) and make the following announcements (Summary in italics - example in bold):
    • Welcome guests - Welcome to this month's First Friday. Before we begin, I have a few brief announcements.
    • Introduce Dayton Diode - We are Dayton's Hackerspace, a community run membership based workshop for pretty much anything, from microcontrollers to robots to metal casting.
    • Tell the guests about our upcoming events - If you enjoy tonight's event, please come back to visit us for one of our upcoming events.
      • Upcoming Open House (if we are having one this month)
      • Upcoming Business Meeting (usually next month)
      • Upcoming First Friday Event (almost always next month)
    • Politely ask for donations - Dayton Diode is a part of DMA, a 501c3 not-for-profit, and runs on its membership dues and gifts from our guests. Tonight's event is one of our public services, please consider leaving a donation in our gifts jar before you leave. Thank you.
    • Thank DMA for their support - We would also like to thank DMA for their support of Dayton Diode. Their generous offer to be our sponsoring agent enables us to focus on bringing Dayton the best hackerspace possible. We are just one of their many Special Interest Groups, including the Linux SIG, several programming SIGs, and more. Please check out their website ( and visit one of their meetings.
    • Introduce speaker and sit down - And finally, I'd like to introduce tonight's speaker: __________. [If possible, include some bit of background about the speaker.] He/She will be speaking on ________________________.
  • At the end of the presentation, thank the speaker and the audience again for coming, then wait until the event breaks up.
  • Finally, close the space, remembering to take out any trash, shut any windows, turn off any lights or equipment, and to lock the door.
